A little Sardinian charm

As Summer starts coming to a close, we long for the endless summer days on the Mediterranean.  We often think about our time in Sardinia, a gorgeous island just south of Corsica and west of the Italian Peninsula.  Sea, sun, sand and copious amounts of seafood.

With stunning turquoise coastlines along the Costa Esmeralda, a few minutes up the road from Porto Cervo, an Italian seaside resort in northern Sardinia, you will find a tiny gem serving fresh Sardinian cuisine at The Spinnaker.

The restaurant had a lovely ambiance with an all-white summer dining room and a sunny terrace where you could spend hours enjoying the cuisine and taking in the beautiful Sardinian sun.

Local Sardinian specialties served include a delicacy of salted, cured grey mullet fish roe, Bottarga di Muggine. The best of its kind can be found in Sardinia. Bottarga can either be eaten raw, sliced thinly and drizzled with virgin olive oil lemon or crumbled and gently folded into a fresh pasta.

For this dish the Bottarga was crumbled and sautéed lightly in olive oil, with a hint of chilli, parsley and lemon juice and stirred into the al dente homemade spaghetti.

Tentazioni del Cardinale (Squid Ink Fettucine with Red Prawns and Rocket)

A favourite pasta dish which sadly was not in season at the time of our visit was the Fresh sea urchin pasta, which beckons us to return to sample this lovely dish.

To quench our thirst on this hot sunny day, we tried a locally produced Sardinian lager.  Ichnusa has been brewed in Assemini, a town near the Sardinian capital Cagliari since 1912 and was the perfect accompaniment to our meal.

There were many delicious desserts to choose from and we opted for two Spinnaker and local specialties; Seadas - fried crepes with sheep cheese and honey, and Tartufo bianco casalingo - white truffle with mascarpone cheese and hot chocolate.

After devouring our desserts, we happily strolled back down to the seaside to enjoy the rest of our day with plenty of time to take in views of the setting sun.
