Stock Bar

From Cumbrae's sustainable farmed meats to Terroni's handcrafted pizzas and pastas, Stock Bar serves some of the freshest organic ingredients and dishes in Toronto.  With its expansive rooftop patio on the third floor overlooking the city, it makes a great spot to catch up with friends and family over lunch, drinks or dinner.

Stock Bar is located within the Stock T.C. building on Montgomery Square.  The 20,000 square foot Art Deco space previously served as a Canada Post Office and the staging point for the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837.  Nowadays, Stock T.C is "a temple to beautiful food, hand selected and crafted by the teams that have shaped Toronto’s dining scene for decades."  Spanning across three floors, the first floor is a grocer offering the same sustainable and handcrafted ingredients and ready-made dishes as the restaurant on the second and third floors.

There are many libations to choose from on the cocktail list and the extensive wine list. The Positano was light and refreshing with citrus notes, a perfect summer rooftop tipple.

Ah the infamous Funghi Assoluti from Terroni's, I had forgotten how much I loved this dish.  It has certainly been awhile since I've had this simple dish of goodness and after the first bite I was in love all over again.  The oyster mushrooms were coated with just the right amount of Parmigiano, garlic and bread crumbs and cooked to a light juicy yet crispy texture.

FUNGHI ASSOLUTI - Arugula, oyster mushrooms, Parmigiano, garlic, bread crumbs, extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar

The Slow Braised Octopus with roasted broccolini was nice and tender and served well as a starter to share.  The brussel sprouts were lightly grilled and tossed with olive oil and parsley which was very refreshing on the palette and unlike the typical fried version coated in lots of sauce that you see at other restaurants.

The handcrafted pasta dishes were perfectly cooked al dente style.  The Spaghetti alla Norcina was my favourite.  I was delightfully surprised by the wonderful combination of hot Italian sausage and black truffle. Though I guess I cannot really  imagine anything NOT pairing well with black truffle...

SPAGHETTI ALLA NORCINA - Hot Italian sausage, Pecorino Romano, garlic, black truffle
CANADIAN LOBSTER TAGLIATELLE

The piece de resistance was the Steak Frites.  10 ounces of sustainably and ethically raised heritage breeds aged to perfection from Cumbrae’s own farms.  I must say that this had been one of the best steaks that I have had in awhile.  Cumbrae's certainly deserves its reputation as one of the top butchers in Toronto.  I was initially tempted to order the Ribeye though figured 14 ounces of meat might be a bit much for a light summer lunch.  Now I'm thinking maybe I should have had both, yes the meat was THAT delicious!
