Perched on the corner of 6th Avenue and King Street resides Charlie Bird, a cool non-traditional Italian-American eatery who has recently helped to revitalise Soho back to a chic and cool dining destination.
Charlie Bird's chef and co-owner is four time James Beard Award nominee Ryan Hardy, who was once private chef to Jay Z and Beyonce.
Wine director and co-owner Robert Bohr and wife Jordan Salcito, Head of Beverage Operations at Momofuku are at the helm of wine selection. Robert Bohr, well known for his wine expertise at Gramercy Tavern, Babbo, Cru and Daniel rounds out this culinary dream team to open Charlie Bird.
With floor to ceiling windows bringing in natural light into the narrow split level dining room, it creates a chic yet cosy space for diners. Add in the stylish art and music and you have lively, casual yet chic ambiance.
Fresh and locally sourced ingredients are featured well on the menu and simply laid out. Not to be missed dishes on the Raw menu are the Montauk Oysters with tomato vinegar and the Razor Clams with fennel and pickled chilis. The pickled chilis add a nice touch of heat to the refreshing flavours of the razor clam and the depth of the fennel.
For the pasta, the must tries are the Duck Egg Spaghetti with Uni, Braised Duck Ragu Parpadelle and the Baby Clams Spaghetti (which has both little neck and razor clams). Can you tell I love my seafood?
The wine list by Robert Bohr is brilliantly chosen featuring unique grape varietals and a large premium selection. The best part is that all wines from this list are also available by half bottle.
We didn't get to dessert as we only popped in for a spot of lunch, but will definitely be back again for dinner. What an enjoyable dining experience at Charlie Bird with impeccable yet not fussy service, a stellar wine list and a tasty menu with fresh ingredients.
